Medical Venesection

Venesection, also known as blood-letting, is a procedure to reduce red blood cells. This is the simplest and quickest way of reducing the number of red cells in your blood. It will reduce the amount of blood in your body by removing about one pint (half a litre) of blood at a time. This may be needed to reduce iron levels or the thickness and viscosity of the blood to safe levels in certain medical situations.

The procedure is similar to blood donation but the blood is discarded. It takes about 30 minutes. This proceedure is carried out by medically qualified doctors and requires a prior consultation to ensure that your are suitable and the procedure is needed.
