The Hay Fever Steroid Injection

Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to substances such as dust mites, mould, or pollens. Symptoms are typically worse between late March and September when pollen counts are high. Common Symptoms Include: Coughing and sneezing; Nasal congestion or runny nose, itchy nose, throat, and eyes, watery eyes, fatigue and postnasal drip (mucus collection at the back of the throat). Unlike a common cold, hay fever symptoms result from allergen exposure rather than a virus.

Currently, no specific vaccine for hay fever exists. However, there is an alternative treatment available on prescription from a GP. For those with severe symptoms, the hay fever injection can reduce discomfort, enabling you to enjoy the outdoors again.

For severe cases, a hay fever steroid injection, available only on prescription, may help. This injection contains a corticosteroid that suppresses the immune system’s reaction to allergens, reducing symptoms. The injection is administered intramuscularly, the dosage is tailored to body weight (typically 1 mg/kg and the effects may be felt within 48 hours and last up to 6 months.

This treatment is not specifically licensed for hay fever in the UK and is only available on prescription. It is typically considered a last-resort option after other treatments fail. For mild to moderate symptoms, explore these alternatives first:

  • Over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops

  • Simple measures like staying indoors during high pollen counts or using Vaseline around the nostrils

The injection is not recommended for individuals with certain conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or active infections. Consult us first for professional advice.
