The Migraine Drip

The evidence supporting riboflavin (vitamin B2) for migraine prevention is based on several clinical studies and guidelines.

Mechanism: Riboflavin is essential for mitochondrial energy production. Since migraines may be linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, riboflavin is thought to help by improving energy metabolism in brain cells.

Clinical Studies:

- A 1998 randomised controlled trial (RCT) found that riboflavin daily significantly reduced migraine frequency and duration compared to a placebo.

- A 2004 study in children and adolescents suggested riboflavin may help reduce migraine frequency.

- A 2016 meta-analysis of multiple studies concluded that riboflavin is a safe and effective option for migraine prevention, though more large-scale studies are needed.

Guidelines: The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and other international guidelines recognise riboflavin as a potential migraine treatment due to its efficacy and safety.
