Ozone Therapy

ozone therapy in the Uk

What is medical-grade ozone? Ozone gas (O3) is the oxygen (O2) we breathe with an extra atom added. The medical use of ozone was pioneered by German scientists in the sixties. Before the advent of antibiotics, ozone was the main antimicrobial therapy and had been used in world wars to sterilise infected wounds. According to the International Scientific Committee of Ozone Therapy (www.isco3.org): as of 2020, ozone therapy has been regulated by the state in 13 countries. Some of these countries, e.g Spain and Brazil, have ozone therapy offered in the public health facilities.

How does ozone work? Ozone does not work directly; it instantaneously interacts with components of the cells to form secondary chemical compounds known collectively as "ozonides". It is those "secondary messengers" that exert the biological effects seen with ozone therapy. The effect of ozone is related to 3 main actions:

  • Ozone is thought to increase the body's antioxidant capacity;

  • Ozone is thought to boost the immune system;

  • Ozone is thought to increase a specific enzyme in red blood cells called 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) thus allowing the red cells to release more oxygen to tissues.

What conditions can be helped by ozone? Ozone has been used in a variety of conditions involving "oxidative stress" or faulty immune system such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, infections, neurological conditions, chronic fatigue, brain fog or simply to boost energy and rejuvenate.

  • Auto-haemotherapy (WATCH): This is the most popular method in Europe that was pioneered by the German scientists where a small amount of blood is extracted then mixed with ozone/oxygen gas and an anticoagulant before injecting the blood back. This process is known as "Major Auto-haemotherapy".  The amount of blood taken and the dose of ozone depends on many factors including the body weight and the health aims. At Leicester Ozone Clinic we offer the original German Major Auto-haemotherapy technique.

  • Ozonized Saline infusion (WATCH): This is the most researched form of ozone therapy. It does not require anticoagulants and does not involve taking blood outside the body thus making it a safer technique. The ozone is dissolved in saline solution which is then given as a drip.

  • Insufflation: This method involves injecting ozone in to a body cavity, such as the colon (rectal insufflation). This is not our preferred method but can be offered in certain bowel inflammatory conditions, please email us first.

  • Joint and soft tissue injection (Prolozone): Ozone may be injected directly in to a joint or in to a soft tissue. The technique has been used for a long time, but more recently, a new term was coined by Dr Shallenberger, a well known ozone therapist, which he called "Prolozone". The "Pro" in Prolozone stands for proliferative therapy. Dr Shallenberger advocated the use of a local anaesthetic called Procain with a tiny dose of a steroid prior to injecting ozone as a gas. The idea is to stabilise the electrical potential of the nerve fibres that carry the pain signal with the local anaesthetic and reduce the inflammation with the homeopathic dose of steroid before injecting large volume of ozone to infiltrate the tissues. This technique was found to be better than standard "Prolotherapy" (prolotherapy, which stands for proliferative therapy, is a technique where an irritant, such as hypertonic dextrose solution, is injected to promote inflammation then tissue proliferation and healing - no ozone is involved in prolotherapy).

which method is more effective?

The selection of autohaemotherapy or saline infusion depends on the clinical circumstances. These methods are simply different delivery mechanisms, just like taking paracetamol as a tablet or syrup—the form doesn’t matter as long as the correct dose is given. What truly matters is ensuring the proper ozone dose is administered. The choice is personal and should be guided by the clinical situation. For instance, using anticoagulants in cancer patients may pose a risk of tumour bleeding, making the saline method a safer alternative. Ultimately, high or low ozone can be effectively delivered through any of these methods.

side effects of ozone

As with any blood-letting procedure or injection, cannula-related complications such as bruising is expected. Some people feel flu-like symptoms after each session, these side effects are transient and should be followed by the desired effect. When ozone is administered by rectal insufflation, it can cause bloating and constipation.

How many therapies do i need?

The number of ozone sessions and the ozone dosage administered will depend on many factors but as a general rule, it is given in cycles that vary between 5 to 20 sessions, usually 1 -2 times a week. The ozone effect is maximum after about 12 sessions.

why choose us?

We are the first clinic to offer ozone therapy in the Midlands and the first to introduce the completely natural ozonated saline method to the UK. We initially established our clinic solely to provide ozone therapy and later expanded to include other intravenous drips. Over the years, we have developed extensive expertise in this field, becoming a training centre for overseas clinics seeking to learn ozone therapy and its various clinical applications.

Our methods and equipments are unique; We take the risk of blood-bourn infections extremely seriously. There is a real inherent risk of cross-infection in any procedure that involves accessing blood and body fluids. Our Standard Operating Procedures for all IV therapies are aligned with the best infection control practices. We use disposable sterile single-use items. For example, in ozone therapy we operate "closed-loop systems" where sterile single-use disposable items are employed and we ensure that our ozone machines are completely independent and never integrated into any circuit that handles blood or bodily fluids.
