Medical Venesection

Venesection, also known as therapeutic phlebotomy, is a procedure that reduces red blood cell volume. This is the simplest and quickest way of reducing the number of red cells in your blood. It will reduce the amount of blood in your body by removing about 1 pint (half a litre) at a time. This may be needed to reduce iron levels or the thickness and viscosity of the blood to safe levels in certain medical situations.

.

The procedure is similar to blood donation, but the blood is discarded. It takes about 30 minutes. This procedure is carried out by medically qualified doctors.

Included in the procedure is an optional 500 ml saline infusion at the end to replenish blood volume and speed recovery.
