Side Effects
Iron infusions are generally considered safe, but as with any medical treatment, there are potential risks and side effects. Some people may experience:
-
Minor side effects: Such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, flushing or muscle cramps. These symptoms are usually temporary and resolve quickly when the infusion is discounted then restarted.
-
Flu-like symptoms and low phosphate: The utilisation of intravenous iron is an energy-intensive process, and some individuals may experience flu-like symptoms for a few days after the infusion. These effects usually ease gradually and are followed by the intended improvement in well-being. However a subset of patient may develop low levels of phosphate (medically known as hypo-phosphatemia). This can lead to a more prolonged fatigue and may require medical intervention. The risk of causing low phosphate after iron infusion depends on the total dose infused and any pre-existing low phosphate or low vitamin d levels. This is one of the reasons we prefer to go below the maximum doses recommended by the manufacturer.
-
Leakage of iron at the administration site (i.e around the cannula): This may lead to potentially long lasting brown discolouration at the site of administration. We avoid this at our clinic by running clear fluid before and after starting the iron infusion to ensure that the cannula is placed within the vein and no risk of iron escaping to the surrounding tissue.
-
Generalised brownish discolouration: On exteremly rare occasions, some patients have reported generalised skin discolouration following iron infusion. While this has not been documented in the medical literature, anecdotal accounts can be found on online forums. Recovery does happen but may take weeks to months for the skin tone to return to normal. In light of this, our preferred approach is to begin with lower doses and divide the total iron requirement across multiple sessions, rather than administering it all in a single infusion.
-
Allergic reactions: These are rare but can occur especially with the older iron formulations which we do not use.
-
Pregnancy: Despite its safety in pregnancy, atLeicester Ozone Clinic we have taken a precautionary approach of not giving iron infusion in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

How do I prevent anaemia?

Iron intake through diet alone may not always be sufficient, and ongoing iron supplementation is often needed after an iron infusion to prevent recurrence. Unfortunately, most conventional iron preparations can be harsh on the stomach, causing unpleasant side effects. In addition, their absorption is quite limited, often requiring continuous use for many months.

At Leicester Ozone Clinic, our focus is on prevention and helping you maintain excellent health after your infusion. To support this, we have sourced innovative solutions that reduce the need for repeat infusions. One such option is SiderAL® Iron, available directly from our store. This advanced form of iron uses Sucrosomal® delivery, developed by a leading international pharmaceutical company, to deliver superior absorption with minimal side effects. It represents one of the most effective iron supplements currently available.

Please email us your blood tests in advance. We specifically require haemoglobin and ferritin levels, ideally obtained 4 weeks or less ago. Also, include your weight and confirm that your GP is aware of your anaemia and that you have discussed it with them. You do not need to include official confirmation from your GP. Alternatively, you can book a separate full consultation with us to discuss your symptoms, blood tests, any potential underlying causes, etc. This is a separate service and is paid separately.
