What is Tibial Nerve Stimulation?

Tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) is a form of neuromodulation involving the use of electrical impulses to reduce urinary symptoms. The "tibial nerve" is a branch of the sciatic nerve that originates in the pelvis and descends towards the legs. Stimulation of the tibial nerve delivers retrograde neuromodulation to the pelvic nerves that controls the bladder function.

What is it for?

TNS is an approved procedure in the NHS for the treatment of overactive bladder symptoms. It can also be used for neurogenic bladder, chronic pelvic pain, painful bladder syndrome, voiding dysfunction and faecal incontinence.

How is it done?

Traditionally, stimulating the tibial nerve can be achieved via a needle inserted in the skin at the ankle. This needle is then attached to an electric pulse generator to stimulate the tibial nerve. More recently, "transcutaneous" Tibial Nerve Stimulation (TTNS) is developed as an effective and non-invasive option. TTNS is an alternative method of stimulating the tibial nerve using a patch on the skin rather than a needle electrode.

How long is the session and how many sessions do I need?

TTNS is done once a week for 12 weeks. Alternatively, it can be delivered twice a week for 6 weeks. Each therapy session lasts 30 minutes.

Why choose Leicester Ozone Clinic?

- We use a non-invasive TTNS. This technique is as effective but without the risks associated with inserting needles in the leg. It is especially suited for those patients who find needle insertion unacceptable.

- Our protocol for delivering TTNS is well researched. We have carefully studied what works best. Our devices are Uk manufactured medical devices designed for nerve stimulation. We choose the stimulation parameters (electrical pulse frequencies, pulse intensity, polarities and stimulation times) that give the best results. The doctor at Leicester Ozone Clinic will determine the optimal stimulation parameters based on your clinical presentation.

Cost:

The cost of each session is £250. For packages please check our pricing section.
